Finding My Passion for the Arts at Tufts
Before attending Tufts University, a significant part of my identity was rooted in sports. I had dedicated 18 years of my life to athletics, thanks to my parents’ efforts to raise a well-rounded child. They enrolled me in guitar lessons and musical theater classes from a young age. In middle school, I even elected to take drama classes, but sports still dominated my life during those formative years.
It wasn’t until I got to Tufts that I discovered a newfound love for the arts. In addition to finding a passion for creative expression, I met some of the most talented, unique, and encouraging people I had ever encountered. The best part? Many of them looked like me. The Black arts scene at Tufts quickly became one of my favorite parts of the university experience.
The talent within this community is truly immense. Whether it’s singing, dancing, acting, photography, or any other form of art, there’s a Black student at Tufts who excels in that area. And the support system is equally impressive. I currently serve as the Vice President of S-Factor, Tufts’ only all-male a cappella group that specializes in music of the African diaspora.
Prior to joining S-Factor, I had no serious singing experience, couldn’t read music, and hadn’t played an instrument since elementary school. Yet, I’ve received nothing but support and encouragement from everyone in the group, as well as from our sister group, the Ladies of Essence, and all who have heard me sing. This has tremendously increased my confidence and allowed me to explore my newfound passion for the arts.
In my first two years at Tufts, I started singing, starred in a play through Envision Black Theater, and am now even assistant directing a play with Envision. None of this was in my plans for my college experience, but I’m so glad I took the opportunity to try something completely new. It wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of the Black artists around me. They are not just my fellow performers; they are my friends who want to see me succeed in whatever I do.
That’s the beautiful thing about the arts community at Tufts – there’s so much room to explore and grow, and having a supportive system that looks like you can be incredibly motivating. I never expected to find such a deep appreciation for the arts in college, but I’m grateful that I did. It’s opened up a whole new world of self-discovery and creativity that I’m excited to continue exploring.

As I reflect on my own journey of uncovering my artistic passions at Tufts, I can’t help but wonder about the countless other students who are embarking on similar paths at universities across the country.
